Police in Shibuya, Tokyo filed charges against a 25-year-old male employee of Yahoo! Japan for allegedly modifying the system of Shogakukan's Manga ONE app without permission to extend his reading time to 160,000 hours. According to authorities, the man has admitted to the charges.
The authorities allege that around March 10, 2016, the suspect sent false information to the Manga ONE server to change the maximum daily hours he was allowed to read manga for free.
The service launched in December 2014, and initially had a system where users were able to read manga for free on the app for a limited time, and then was able to purchase more time. Since then, the system has been modified to a chapter limit of eight chapters per day, and users are able to purchase tickets to read more chapters.
