The live-action television series based on Ryūkishi07 and 07th Expansion's popular When They Cry - Higurashi (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni) horror software will get a sequel in November. The series will be titled Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai and consist of four 60-minute episodes. The main cast will reprise their roles.
The sequel series' story will cover the Meakashi-hen (Eye Opening Chapter) and Tsumihoroboshi-hen (Atonement Chapter) arcs from the original software. Meakashi-hen and Tsumihoroboshi-hen are the first two answer arcs in the original series.
The first live-action television series debuted on May 20 and ran for six episodes. The show covered the Onikakushi-hen (Spirited Away by the Demon Chapter), Watanagashi-hen (Cotton Drifting Chapter)), and Tatarigoroshi-hen (Curse Killing Chapter) arcs. The series told the story of each arc in two episodes.

Tomohiro Kaku (The Case of Hana & Alice's Asanaga-sensei) played Kyōsuke Irie, and Tomohiro Waki (live-action Gokusen's Teruo "Kuma" Kumai) and Shinobu Tsuruta played Teppei Hōjō and Kuraudo Ōishi, respectively.
The members of AKB48's sister idol group NGT48 also featured in the main cast:

- Rika Nakai as Mion Sonozaki, Shion Sonozaki
- Reina Seiji as Satoko Hōjō
- Hinata Honma as Rika Furude

07th Expansion's original Higurashi no Naku Koro ni visual novel software revolved around murders that coincide with an annual festival in a quiet rural village. The software inspired two television anime series, several video anime projects, two live-action films, and manga adaptations by several artists.
