Saw the original ages ago, this and Densha Otoko are some really solid (classic) live-action TV. From what I remember of the 1998 airing though, they smoothed out some of the rough edges from the anime - some of the stuff that didn't translate too well to live-action with the pervy gags or jokes. It was a really good school drama for its time, though I want to go back and watch it now and see exactly how well it holds up, especially with school social issues at the center of each episode's story.

My concern going into a reunion is that it was maybe easier back in the day, to have a resolution that was "afterschool special, heartwarming" in tone and leave it at that. Just having Onizuka join the teaching staff as a former gang member in and of itself was an interesting social commentary at the time of airing, but I don't know that it alone could carry an entire show now in 2024. It's not that the 1998 show was about shock value exactly, but I worry that when the subject matter that the show deals with is inherently political/social in nature, that a reunion isn't going to have "teeth" in 2024 & avoid "rocking the boat".

I'm excited to see the cast again and journey back to the nostalgic GTO of 1998, I really wish it was easier to find and stream now. Even if it's a bit cheesy I'm looking forward to seeing it, I just hope I don't walk away seeing it as Cartman meme'ing "How do I reeech these keeeds....." the whole time.

Part of me wants Nanako Matsushima to reprise Fuyutsuki somehow, because their unforced chemistry was still one of my favorite parts of the original live-action series (and, as far as I can tell, the two are still married IRL, so I'd guess no bad blood there).
