To some extent, I get it. Recruitment sometimes means showing up at seemingly odd places to see if anybody is interested. On the flip side, it's not exactly relevant to the convention, other than the organizers probably weren't going to say no to anyone willing to pay for a booth.

Unfortunately, the FBI did respond before the start of the convention. So, its attendance at Anime NYC is shrouded in mystery.

That was supposed to be "did not respond." Also, w t f.

The U.S Military and Police and Federal Forces have faced some heavy public relations damage due actions caused by their members in these last few years and as a result the number of people to be recruited has plummeted. My Guess is they did some research into anime that focused specifically on their fields to use it to recruit fans.

Why else would they be there? they never showed interest in before like EVER. They must be desperate.

Reading the US Marines and the FBI are attending an anime con has to be the most hilarious thing ever. I would actively avoid any con where any government agency would be involved. I hope this is not a sign of the things to come at other events.

I did too for a moment but to be fair I'm half asleep and I didn't have my morning coffee yet.

I don’t know if I’m being paranoid, but the FBI being involved gives some pause. I just hope this doesn’t involve the beginning of some attempt to slowly censor Japanese animation even in its home country, but at this point, I’d hardly be surprised…As for the marines, I can’t even guess beyond recruitment desperation...

The most of the Marines I remember was them having a presence at the NY Auto Show, which this year was one of those pull-up challenge booths. Even if you have no interest in enlisting due to age or beliefs, people want to do those pull ups just to try and outdo the guy or girl next to them. They always have booths at conventions for otherwise unrelated interests.

The FBI has zero authority over media in Japan. Why would they even care about anime?

Veteran here. Anime is *extremly* popular amongst service members. Anime nights were a fairly common occurrence during my deployments. It's probably a recruiters attempt to reach out. Also, the marines met their recruiting goals so it's probably not so much an act of desperation as it may seem.

The Javits center (and many other convention centers) are state owned, so the government is already pretty involved from the get go.
