Akira (movie) Decent What? One of the greatest anime films of all time you say? Why, I must watch it! Yeah... I'm not into it. I believe this is a must see for all otaku, but its not that good. There are some plot holes and if you have any questions you have to read the manga. I don't feel like I wasted my time though, and the animation is amazing. Just don't except a great story. Also here's some advice: the original dub is horrid, avoid unless you want a laugh.
Angel Beats! (TV) Very good
Animal Crossing (movie) Decent
anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (TV) Very good A wonderful story about moving on with life. Anohana is very true to life with its characters and story (minus the whole ghost girl part) and how it handles the subjects it presents. This could have easily been live-action, which is a base breaker since I know some people who hate that fact and others who like to watch an anime where nothing strange happens (again, minus the ghost girl). All in all, Anohana is worth a watch.
Astro Boy (U.S. movie) Decent I love this movie... or at least the first 30 minutes. I wish those first 30 minutes could be taken to a different film and expanded on to create a whole new movie. I wouldn't call the rest of it bad (but I'm sure many Astro Boy fans would disagree) just average. For me if you combine the good parts with the rest of the film you get an above average.
Bakugan Battle Brawlers (TV) I don't know why but looking back it seems at some point I developed feelings for it. Is it the characters? The battles? Or maybe because I like stuff that's intended for children but is well written? Meh, I wouldn't call this well written. Oh well there's no use in denying it, for whatever reason I like Bakugan.
Bakugan Battle Brawlers: New Vestroia (TV)
Black Butler (TV) Good
Black Butler II (TV) Very good (dub & sub)
Black Cat (TV) Decent The definition of an above average anime, but that's not because of the writing quality. It can be very stupid at times but thanks to its great presentation and entertaining characters Black Cat can be a lot of fun. Think of it as the kid version of Cowboy Bebop with Edward replaced by Rei Ayanami.
Castle in the Sky (movie)
Chobits (TV)
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV) Excellent Wow, did I have fun with this! I had to turn off my brain in some parts but I say it was worth it. I think I may have enjoyed it more than Death Note, probably because the series was grayer in terms of morality. You read "gayer" instead of "grayer" didn't you? *Sigh* me too...
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (TV) Decent HOLY [BLEEP]! ON A [BLEEP]ING SANDWICH! - Tristan Taylor, Yu-Gi-Oh The Abridged Series, and my reaction to episode 21 Good effort Code Geass R2, however you aren't as good as the first season, not by a long shot. You took the narm and melodrama of the original (mind you I enjoyed the melodrama) and turned it into something that fell short of the original. I mean it got really, REALLY stupid. Not to mention how it sold out with the blatant fan service, obvious Pizza Hut product placement and the Evangelion elements that did not work here AT ALL (Abusing the caps lock today, aren't we?) just to appeased otaku. I still had some fun along the way while I wasn't bawling my eyes out though. I will get hate for this but I really liked the ending and I can't think of a different ending that would have fit this series as well as it did, unfortunately due to the clumsy execution I couldn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to leaving me unfulfilled emotionally. Due to this season Code Geass has been moved to the Scrappy Pile for me, which is a shame because it could have been one of my favorites. Because of this second series Code Geass has been removed from my favorite anime list and is now in the same pile that the before mentioned Evangelion is in. I hate when this happens. Now I have to turn to fanfiction.
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Masterpiece This is absolutely wonderful, plain and simple. Definitely a must watch for all anime fans. Favorite Anime: #2
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie Excellent
Death Note (TV) Excellent
Death Note Relight - Visions of a God (special) Good What? There's a Death Note movie which is the Death Note series but told through the eyes of Ryuk? Great, I'm there! Oh wait, it's all a recap movie? Oh well, I'll still watch. I don't like recap movies since they are perhaps the cheapest from of cash-grab in existent. The only recap movies I like are the Madoka Magica ones because the series was 6 hours long and the 2 movies combine are 4 hours long with plenty of animation changes to look out for. However I can't say it's bad because it's Death Note. At least there's some original animation, I just wish they did something with the idea of Death Note being told by Ryuk. Don't be fooled by what's promise, there are scenes from the series that are shown in Relight that Ryuk couldn't possibly be present at.
Elfen Lied (TV) Decent There are some series that get better upon re-watching and then there's stuff like Elfen Lied. I think that's why its so highly rated, because people only watch it once. The deepest thing in this is the horror and how its more sophisticated than most horror/torture porn titles (especially the latter).
Elfen Lied (OAV) Decent
Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (movie) Excellent Evangelion, now with 75% more sparkles and rainbows! I gave Excellent for a rating because it is the first few episodes of the original Evangelion (which I love) but perfected. The animation is fantastic and it alone is worth the price of admission, I can't even begin to describe how glorious it is. Major props to the animators for taking the laziest designed Angel and turning it into the best looking thing of the movie. Also bless their little hearts, they finally gave Kaworu the voice he deserves (apologies to Greg Ayres)!
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (movie) Excellent Hooray! The rainbow tradition has been continued! Evangelion, now with 100% more rainbows! But wait, it gets even better. The sparkles have a sound effect this time! Best. Remake. Ever. So I'm going to be copying myself again by saying it's a few episodes of Evangelion (this time in a different order, don't worry there's plenty of new stuff too), but perfected. And again props have to be given, this time to whoever came up with the idea for the dummy plug scene. It is far more horrifying here than it was in the original series. I won't tell you how they improved it so you can be surprised and I assure you it is delightfully twisted. Rei's character, at least in my opinion, has taken a step up from the original series and has become far more engaging for me. Actually now that I think about every character has improved. Asuka is less annoying, Shinji gets some very good character development and I'm very curious to see how Kaworu will be handled when he becomes involved. I gave Excellent as a rating because I like it more than the first film but I wouldn't call it a Masterpiece *sigh* someday EVA, someday.
FLCL (OAV) Excellent
Ghost in the Shell (movie)
(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie)
Grave of the Fireflies (movie) Excellent
Haibane Renmei (TV) Masterpiece Haibane Renmai has a story that looks simple but it turns out there is far more to it then meets the eye. However, even if you can't figure out all of the symbolism you can still understand the show perfectly. Unfortunately it is hard to talk about what makes it what it is. I have tried to tell people the reasons why they should watch Haibane Renmai but found I have trouble promoting it. Because of this I am forced to quote JesuOtaku from her Top 25 Anime video (it's on Youtube and Blip.tv if you are curious). "You can kinda tell people what's it about, but what you see here, and what you see for most of the series is little girls wandering around a quiet town talking, and sometimes crying in darken rooms. So its not the kind of thing that offers itself up as a must see. But I assure you it is." I'm unable to say more on the subject so just go and watch it.
Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi (U.S. TV)
Howl's Moving Castle (movie)
Hyper Doll (OAV) Not really good I chose to put Not Really Good because if you watch it with friends you can have a lot of fun mocking it. 'Course I imagine copies of Hyper Doll would be hard to find, sucks. If you can't find a copy to mock I recommend OtakuAscended's commentary with VideoMaster on Youtube, its hilarious.
Kiki's Delivery Service (movie)
Kill Bill Chapter 3: The Origin of O-Ren (movie segment) Good I feel kinda weird giving this a rating since its just a sequence in the film Kill Bill (which I love) but I'll go ahead anyway. I think its a good flashback and the animation is cool, nothing else really. Wow, shortest review ever.
Mad Bull 34 (OAV) Worst ever Only watch this if you want a good mind screw. In fact I won't even attempt to tell you what happens in this show. Everyone should go into Mad Bull 34 blind because just after you start to relax thinking that the show reached its peak of insanity it somehow manages to find a way to top itself. But when you get down to it Mad Bull is terrible so be warned.
Millennium Actress (movie) Masterpiece
My Neighbor Totoro (movie) Very good Come on, what am I suppose to say? It's Totoro. Have you even met someone who hates Totoro? No you haven't, and people who say they hate him are liars. How dare you even think that. Go to the corner!
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Good Neon. Genesis. Evangelion. Oh man, this review is going to get me killed. Before I start I want to point out I like Evangelion. I found the first 2 thirds very enjoyable and I even put it on my favorite anime list, but the ending is one of the worst I have ever seen in my life. I wish I could talk about it but it is impossible without spoiling it. I don't care if everyone has seen Evangelion, I'm not taking the chance of ruining it for someone, if that means I'll be torn apart by fanboys so be it. However I will say this, it fails at philosophy, it fails hard. Oh and for anyone going "you just don't like it because you don't get it" I have some news for you: understanding the point of something does not automatically make it good. Example : the "orange you glad I didn't say orange" knock knock joke. The point is that the word "orange" can sound like "aren't." Does knowing the point of the joke make it funny? No, no it doesn't. This applies to all forms of entertainment. Sure you can appreciate something more if you understand it, but that doesn't mean you will automatically like it more nor does it make it good. All I have left to say is if you want to know the reasons why I hate the ending I suggest looking at JesuOtaku's review on Blip.tv (don't worry she gave a good review, just remember her scale is out of 4 stars). She summarizes almost everything wrong without spoiling so its safe for Eva virgins. Recap time: Do I like Eva? Yes. Do I like the last few episodes? Hell no, and I would have given Excellent/Masterpiece for a rating if the ending hadn't reared its ugly head. Let's all just agree that the episode 26 easter egg ending on the platinum version of the series is the best ending and end this overly long review at that. Insert "You Bastard!"/NGE Abridged joke here.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (movie) Decent "Holy crap! I am freaking out!" - Peter Griffin, Family Guy. Okay was Anno still insane while writing this ? Its more screwed up than the original! While I wait for an answer I'll give my opinion. I think it is the same as the series because it starts out very strong (minus a certain hospital scene, ugh) but ends terribly. And just like the series itself I don't want to talk about the ending because I'm afraid of spoiling it. I like the series' ending better, but that doesn't say much since its like comparing the original Twilight to its film version (Oh, Burn! Take that fangirls!). I do like it, or at least the first half, and even though Kaworu got about five lines his actor was still far better here than the one used in the show (don't worry I'm not talking about Greg Ayres in the director's cut, did a good job voicing Kaworu by the way, I just don't think the voiced match, that's all).
Ouran High School Host Club (TV) Excellent
Paprika (movie) Excellent (dub & sub)
Perfect Blue (movie) Very good Perfect Blue is my favourite anime movie, but I can't call it anything besides Very Good because of the bad ending and the other problems throughout the film. Despite that I will always love Perfect Blue since it cemented my love for anime. I also can't recommend it to a lot of people because of what happens in the movie itself but you should be find if you know what your getting yourself into. Favorite Anime Movie: #1
Pokémon 4Ever (movie 4)
Pokémon Advance (TV)
Pokémon Chronicles (TV)
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness (special) So-so
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Team Go-Getters Out of the Gate! (special) Decent
Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea (movie 9)
Pokémon the Movie: White - Victini and Zekrom (movie 14)
Pokémon: Jirachi Wish Maker (movie 6)
Pokémon: Mewtwo Returns (special)
Pokémon: The First Movie (movie 1)
Pokémon: The Mastermind of Mirage Pokemon (special)
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (movie) Good Ponyo Ponyo little fishie in the sea, man can anyone get that out of their head? Anyway, a cute effort.
Princess Jellyfish (TV) Very good I do not like romances (I think it's 'cause I'm suffocated by bad romantic comedies at my house). Despite that I like Princess Jellyfish. I thought it was funny and entertaining and its now part of my very short list of favorite romantic comedies.
Princess Mononoke (movie) Masterpiece Yeah that's right, I rated my second favourite anime film higher than my first. Why? Because unlike Perfect Blue, Princess Mononoke just might be a perfect movie in its writing and execution. That and there is no last minute happy ending. Favorite Anime Movie: #2
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (TV) Masterpiece If a series can keep up until 3:00 am watching it and then force me to stay up for another 2 hours to absorb everything that happened its a masterpiece. Definitely the greatest ending I have ever seen. Marathoning this series in one day was my proudest moment as an otaku. Favorite Anime: #1 (Side Note: I am also grateful to this series for giving me the power to say one of the greatest combinations of words in existent. *Ahem* "Naked Space Hug FTW!")
Sailor Moon (TV)
Sailor Moon R: The Movie
Spirited Away (movie)
Summer Wars (movie)
Vampire Hunter D (OAV) Worst ever Good crap this was horrible! I'm actually in shock some people think this is good. Seriously? What did those people watch? Normally I wouldn't be this mean but the flaws are literary EVERYWHERE and are consistently smacking you in the face. Without a doubt this is one of the worst I have ever seen. It feels like something the Nostalgic Critic would review.
Yu-Gi-Oh! (TV 2/2000)
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (TV)
Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Movie (U.S. movie 2/2004) I remember seeing this when I was a mini 2heartgirl. It didn't come off as a big deal because I lived in a town where Pokemon was the biggest thing (luckily I never had to face a Mon war when I was small because of this, or the stereotype of how all Canadians are nice people is true, take your pick) so even though everyone saw it we all went "Meh" in response. I don't care for it, but you shouldn't be ashamed if you enjoyed it.
